Saving Paradise, created for the Discovery Gallery at the Alberta Craft Council in Edmonton, features ten framed textile works depicting tree species of Western Canada. Many of these are also native to Ontario where I live, however their environment and growth patterns differ from the Eastern versions. I took that into consideration with my portrayals.
And with each tree hanging, it seemed natural to include a portrait of its seed. Besides being inherently beautiful, tree seeds symbolize both vulnerability and strength. They transmit fresh combinations of genes from previous generations, ensuring natural diversity. Seeds protect within them, sometimes for years, the collective past of a species and are a symbol of hope for the future.
All of these pieces are framed and matched in pairs.... I hope you enjoy them!
