SILVER MAPLE(Acer saccharinum) This is a handsome, fast growing soft wooded tree, and the tallest of our native maples. The roots of Silver Maple are deep and invasive, preferring moist lowlands and fertile soils. Its abundant seeds and hollow trunks for dens and nests make it a favourite attraction for wildlife. The sap, which is roughly half as sweet as that of the Sugar maple, was harvested by natives as a mild, light sweetener. Twigs and bark were used to make a black dye for tanning leather.
