TAMARACK(Larix laricina)

Tamarack is a most unique coniferous tree. Easily spotted in the fall for its soft golden glow, it is the only conifer in North America that sheds all its foliage for winter. In the spring, it resembles a lime green mist, and keeps its fresh green cast all through summer.

Tamarack bark was used by settlers for tanning hides, and Natives used leaves and bark for a host of medicinal purposes from cough medicines to disinfectants. The strong fibrous roots were used for weaving baskets and bags, and even for sewing canoes. Its cones are a desirable food source for wildlife. It likes moist areas, from well drained light soils to bog edges, and occurs in every province and territory of Canada. A stand of tamarack in the fall is a magical sight.
